How to Choose the Right POS System for Your Restaurant

Choosing a POS system for a restaurant is fundamentally different from choosing one for retail. Restaurants need table management, kitchen display integration, modifier handling, tip management, and often multiple order entry points — from counter to table-side to online ordering. The first decision is whether to use a closed ecosystem or a more flexible setup that lets you compare hardware, payment processing, and software separately. A brand-agnostic review gives you more leverage before you sign a multi-year agreement. Kitchen Display Systems (KDS) become important as order volume rises. A KDS can replace paper tickets, route orders to the correct station, and show prep-time patterns. Look for a POS that integrates cleanly with your kitchen workflow rather than adding another manual step. Table-side payment terminals are increasingly expected by diners. They speed up table turns, reduce errors, and improve the tip experience. The best implementations use wireless terminals that connect to the POS via WiFi or Bluetooth — no wires, no awkward trips to the counter. Online ordering integration is now table stakes. Your POS should be able to receive orders from your website, Skip the Dishes, Uber Eats, and DoorDash into a single order queue. This prevents the 'tablet farm' problem where staff are juggling multiple devices and manually entering orders. Finally, consider the total cost of ownership. Some POS providers offer low upfront costs but charge high monthly fees, per-transaction surcharges, or lock you into expensive payment processing. Get a clear picture of all costs over a three-year period before signing.
